FAQ 2003: I just need a really good lawyer in my area.
The Coalition of Parent Support exists because of the conviction
of many individuals who have been through the system that the best lawyer
in the world cannot overcome bias or bad legislation. While a lawyer
may help you, if you remain ignorant of the realities of the system, your
outcome may be far worse that it might have been. You may find other
groups that are owned and operated by lawyers and paralegals, or are fronts
for sellers of "empowerment" seminars. They will undoubtedly promise
you that they can improve your outcome for a price. Be wary of these
groups. You may be at the most vulnerable point in your entire life,
and be desperate to hear someone offering you false hope. These groups
will take advantage of that vulnerability.
How to Get Help: Join COPS
The Coalition of Parent Support can help you...BUT you must
take the initiative! In every local chapter, there are
volunteers who will talk to members. While we cannot give legal advice,
if you take the initiative to contact the volunteers (and not just one
of them!), you will have a far better chance to affect your outcome..and
even to find a decent lawyer in your area.
Call the closest chapter to you
Tell them you need to speak with volunteers about your case
If there are no volunteers in your area that have cases similar
to yours, try calling another chapter
DO NOT WAIT for someone to hand you a magic solution to your
problems on a silver platter
GO to the next scheduled meeting and get as many phone numbers
as you can. Then call, call, call.
